Reports To: Board of Directors

Role Summary

 

The Treasurer is a key member of the Board of Directors responsible for overseeing the financial health of the organization. The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director, finance staff, and other board members to ensure sound financial management and compliance with all financial regulations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Financial Oversight
  • Ensure the organization adheres to its financial policies and maintains accurate records.
  • Monitor the organization’s budget and financial performance, including reviewing monthly financial reports.
  • Provide the board with regular updates on the organization’s financial position.
  1. Budgeting and Planning
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and propose an annual budget.
  • Guide the board in understanding the financial implications of decisions and long-term planning.
  1. Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable financial laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Oversee the preparation of tax returns and audits (if applicable).
  • Review and maintain risk management policies, including adequate insurance coverage.
  1. Internal Controls
  • Review and recommend updates to financial policies and procedures to safeguard the organization’s assets.
  • Ensure there is proper documentation for financial transactions.
  1. Reporting and Communication
  • Present financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow projections, at board meetings.
  • Clearly explain financial data and highlight risks, opportunities, or irregularities.
  1. Collaboration
  • Serve as the main liaison between the finance committee (if applicable) and the board.
  • Work with staff or contractors to support bookkeeping, accounting, and financial reporting functions.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of financial management, budgeting, and accounting principles.
  • Experience: Background in finance, accounting, or a related field; CPA or equivalent experience is a plus.
  • Skills: Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Proficiency in financial software and tools.
  • Commitment: Understanding of the organization’s mission and willingness to dedicate time to fulfill the Treasurer’s responsibilities.

 

Time Commitment

  • Attend regular board meetings (e.g., monthly or quarterly).
  • Dedicate additional time to reviewing financial documents and meeting with staff/committee members as needed.
